Lamphun Province (Thai: ลำพูน; English: Lamphun) capital for the oldest city in northern Thailand, founded in 663 AD, originally known as "Lipchai City", the Halibunchai dynasty of ChamaThevi queen in the 9th century set up in this capital. The Mon Dynasty established Thailand, the last power of the Halipunchai Dynasty in the region. It was once ruled by Burma, then reclaimed by King Cheng the Great, and was part of Chiang Mai Province. During the era of the Bangkok Dynasty, the city grew strong and was elevated to the status of a province in 1954.
