Hainan Province, abbreviated as "Qiong", is the southernmost provincial administrative region of the People's Republic of China, the provincial capital of Haikou City; located in South China, the north of the Qiongzhou Strait and the boundary with Guangdong, west of the Gulf of Tonkin and Guangxi, Vietnam, the east of the South China Sea and Taiwan, the South East and south of the South China Sea, and the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, as a neighbor; Hainan Terrain Hainan's terrain is high in the center, surrounded by low, high in the middle, a vaulted mountain terrain; tropical maritime monsoon climate; a total land area of 35,400 square kilometers, the total area of jurisdiction of the sea is about 2 million square kilometers. As of 2023, Hainan Province has four prefecture-level cities, five county-level cities, four counties, and six autonomous counties under its jurisdiction. As of the end of 2023, Hainan Province had a resident population of 10.43 million.
During the Qin Dynasty, Hainan was a county outside of Xiang County. In the first year of Yuanfeng of the Western Han Dynasty (110 years ago), there were 2 counties in Hainan, namely Zhuya and Dan'er, with 16 counties under their jurisdiction, and Hainan was formally included in the map of the Western Han Dynasty.In April 1988, the administrative district of Hainan was abolished, and the People's Government of Hainan Province was established, which designated the island of Hainan as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
Hainan Province is a special economic zone and pilot free trade zone in China. Historical volcanic eruptions have left many dead craters on Hainan Island; hot springs are widely distributed on the island, most of which are therapeutic hot springs with low mineralization, high temperatures, large volumes of water, and good water quality. Monuments of historical significance mainly include the Wugong Ancestral Hall built to commemorate Li Deyu and other famous historical ministers, Dongpo Academy, the site of Su Dongpo's residence in Qiongqiong, and Su Gong Ancestral Hall built to commemorate Su Shi, the Qiongtai Academy built by Jiao Yinghan of the Leiqiong Military Police Department in the Qing Dynasty, the tomb of Qiu Joon of the Ming Dynasty, the tomb of the Ming Dynasty Qing Dynasty official Hai Rui, and the well of Hanyu Fubo, which was excavated on the orders of Ma Yan, a general who was sent by the Emperor Guangwu of the Han Dynasty to lead his troops into Hainan in order to save the soldiers and horses. As well as the Yazhou Ancient City, Wei's Shrine, Wenchang Confucius Temple and so on.
In 2023, Hainan's provincial GDP was 755.118 billion yuan, an increase of 9.2% over the previous year.
