Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (Uyghur: شىنجاڭئۇيغۇرئاپتونومرايونى), abbreviated as "Xin", is an autonomous region of the People's Republic of China, with Urumqi as its capital, located in northwestern China, and one of the five ethnic minority autonomous regions of China. With an area of 1,664,900 square kilometers, it is the largest provincial-level administrative region in China in terms of land area, accounting for about one-sixth of China's total land area. As of the end of 2022, the resident population of the autonomous region was 25.87 million. As of January 2023, the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has four prefectural-level cities, five regions, five autonomous prefectures, and 12 county-level cities under the jurisdiction of the autonomous region, with the autonomous regional people's government stationed in the city of Urumqi.
Xinjiang is an inseparable part of China's territory. In the second year of Shenjue of the Western Han Dynasty (60 B.C.), the Western Han Dynasty set up the Western Regions Capital in Wubi (in present-day Luntai County), marking the formal incorporation of the Xinjiang region into China's territory. In 1884, the Qing government formally set up a province in Xinjiang, and took the meaning of "new return of the native land" and renamed the western region as "Xinjiang", and in September 1949, Xinjiang was peacefully liberated, and on October 1, 1955, the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR) was established.
Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is located in the hinterland of Asia and Europe, with a land border of more than 5,600 kilometers, bordering Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Mongolia, India and Afghanistan, and is historically an important corridor of the ancient Silk Road, and a necessary place for the second Asia-Europe Continental Bridge. It is the second "Asia-Europe Continental Bridge", and its strategic location is very important. There are 56 ethnic groups in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR), including Han Chinese, Uygurs, Kazakhs, Hui, Mongols, Kirgiz, Sibe, Tajiks, Uzbeks, Manchus, Daur, Tatars, Russians and other ethnic groups.
In 2023, the gross regional product of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region was 1,912.591 billion yuan, an increase of 6.8% over the previous year.
