Karamay City (Uyghur: قارامايشەھىرى), also known as Oil City and Black Oil Mountain, with a per capita GDP of more than 240,000 yuan, is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and is an important national petroleum and petrochemical base as well as a key new industrialized city in Xinjiang and an agglomeration area for the world's petroleum and petrochemical industries. As of 2022, the city has four districts under its jurisdiction, with a total area of 7,733 square kilometers, a resident population of 487,000, an urban population of 482,000, and an urbanization rate of 98.97%.
Karamay is located in the western part of the Junggar Basin in Xinjiang, the central region of the Eurasian continent - the center of the Pan-Central Asian region. Karamay means "black oil" in Uyghur, and is the only city in the world named after oil. The city's name originates from a group of natural asphalt mounds in the northeastern corner of the city, the Black Oil Hills, which are referred to as "the eldest son of the Republic of China's oil" and "the first son of China's oil". It is called "the eldest son of the Republic's petroleum" and "the western holy land of China's petroleum industry". Karamay is the first large oil field explored and developed after the founding of New China, the city was founded in 1958, and in 2002, its crude oil production exceeded 10 million tons, becoming the first large oil field in western China with a crude oil production of 10 million tons.
Karamay has many tourist attractions, the World Devil City has been selected as "China's most magnificent Yadan" and "one of the 50 places in China worth visiting for foreigners". 2011, Karamay was awarded the honorary title of " National Civilized City". In 2011, Kelamayi City was awarded the honorary title of "National Civilized City".In 2017, Kelamayi City was selected as the Fifth National Civilized City.In 2017, it was ranked 14th in China's Comprehensive Well-being Index for Prefecture-level Cities.In November 2018, it was selected as one of the top 100 cities in China's Comprehensive Well-being Index.
In 2022, Kelamayi City will realize a gross regional product of 118.81 billion yuan.
