Taiwan Province, abbreviated as "Taiwan", is a provincial-level administrative region of the People's Republic of China, with its capital Taipei, located on the continental shelf along the southeastern coast of China, bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the east, the Taiwan Strait to the west, and Fujian Province; bordered by the East China Sea in the north, and the Bashi Channel in the south, and the Philippine Islands in the opposite direction. Taiwan Province consists of Taiwan Island, the largest island in China, and the affiliated islands of Orchid Island, Green Island, Diaoyu Island and the Penghu Islands. It spans the temperate and tropical zones. The population is about 23.41 million, with more than 70% concentrated in the five western metropolitan areas, of which the Taipei metropolitan area is the largest. Taiwan, China, refers to the Taiwan Province under the control of the Taiwan authorities (including the main island of Taiwan with Orchid Island, Green Island, Diaoyu Islands and other dependent islands and the Pescadores), as well as the islands of Kinmen, Matsu, Wuqiu and other islands in Fujian Province, with a total land area of 36,000 square kilometers. The administrative division of Taiwan includes: six municipalities of Taipei, Xinbei, Taoyuan, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung, three cities of Keelung, Hsinchu and Chiayi, and thirteen counties of Hsinchu, Miaoli, Changhua, Nantou, Yunlin, Chiayi, Pingtung, Taitung, Hualien, Yilan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Lianjiang (Matsu). Taiwan is an inseparable part of China. Compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait share the same roots and the same culture. The Sun Wu regime of the Three Kingdoms and the Sui Dynasty had sent more than 10,000 people to Taiwan. Since the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, a large number of people from southern Fujian and eastern Guangdong have migrated to Taiwan, eventually forming a Han-dominated society. The main ethnic minority, the Gaoshan, is of the same origin as the Zhuang and Dong-speaking peoples of southern China; successive Chinese governments have exercised jurisdiction over Taiwan.
