Miaoli County, belonging to Taiwan Province of the People's Republic of China, is located in the southern coastal area of the northern part of the island of Taiwan, neighboring Hsinchu County to the east, bordering the Taiwan Strait to the west, bordering Taichung City to the south, and adjoining Hsinchu City and Hsinchu County to the north, with a square range of moderate domain. Area of 1820.3149 square kilometers, June 2015 population of 565,704 people. 1889, Miaoli was officially established as a county, then changed to belong to Hsinchu County, 1950 re-establishment of the county. It has 2 cities (Miaoli City and Toufen City), 5 townships (Yuanli Township, Tongxiao Township, Houlong Township, Zhunan Township, and Zhulan Township), and 11 townships (Dahu Township, Gongguan Township, Tongluo Township, Nanzhuang Township, Touya Township, Sanyi Township, Xihu Township, Zaoqiao Township, Sanwan Township, Shitan Township, and Tai'an Township). The county seat is located in Miaoli City. Miaoli County has many mountains and few fields, and Miaoli City is known as the "Mountain City". Miaoli County is rich in tea, sugar cane, jute, and green fruits, and is the largest producer of oil and natural gas in Taiwan. The petrochemical industrial zone in Toufen Township was originally the center of the petrochemical industry in the north. Other industries include meat, food processing, automobiles, and rubber. Miaoli County in Taiwan is a large Hakka county, most of whom immigrated to the Taiwan area from the Guangdong and Fujian areas during the Yongzheng and Qianlong periods of the Qing Dynasty.
Miaoli County's economic industries are mainly based on agriculture and livestock farming, and in 1988 the county's industrial structure was 24.8% primary, 43.7% secondary, and 31.5% tertiary.In 2012, the county's GDP was US$10.05 billion, with a per capita GDP of US$18,031.91.
