Nantou County is located in central Taiwan Province of the People's Republic of China, covering an area of 4,106.4 square kilometers, with a 2015 population of 511,000 people. It is an inland county of Taiwan Province.
Nantou County is bordered by Hualien County to the east, Changhua and Yunlin counties to the west, Chiayi County and Kaohsiung City to the south, and Taichung City to the north, with a moderately square domain. The central and eastern part of the county is mountainous and hilly, and the western part is low hills and plains; the 3,925-meter-high Yushan Mountain is the highest peak in Taiwan. The average annual temperature is 19°C, which is relatively comfortable throughout the year. The many high mountains in the county block the monsoon water vapor from the Pacific Ocean, providing Taiwan with an abundant source of rainfall, which makes Taiwan have more annual rainfall than areas at the same latitude.
Nantou County is home to a large number of ethnic minorities, including the Atayal, Bunun, Tsou, and Shao, who live along the banks of Sun Moon Lake.
Since Zheng Chenggong drove away the Dutch and restored Taiwan, the local people have been working hard to open up the mountains and forests, and to expand the territory. 2008 saw a population of more than 530,000 people in Nantou County, with a total of 503 family names, each of which has its origin in the mainland, and each of which had its ancestors come to Taiwan from the Central Plains, via Fujian and Guangdong, and whose language, customs, and morals are a continuation of the orthodoxy of the Central Plains.
On December 25, 1981, Nantou Township was reorganized into Nantou City, and the county was divided into one city, four towns, and eight townships, with one city being Nantou City.
In 2012, Nantou County's GDP was US$9.5 billion, with a per capita GDP of US$18,200.
