The Kingdom of Cambodia (TheKingdomofCambodia), or Cambodia for short, is located on the Central South Peninsula, bordering Thailand in the west and northwest, Laos in the northeast, Vietnam in the east and southeast, and facing the Gulf of Thailand in the south. With a land area of 181,000 square kilometers and a population of about 16 million (as of April 2023), Cambodia is divided into 24 provinces and one municipality (Phnom Penh), with the capital city of Phnom Penh, where the Khmer ethnic group accounts for 80% of the total population.
Cambodia, known as Khmer, is an ancient civilization with a long history, establishing a unified kingdom as early as the 1st century. the Angkor Dynasty from the 9th to the 14th centuries was the most glorious era in Cambodian history. in 1863, it fell under the French protectorate. in September 1940, it was invaded by Japan, and on November 9, 1953, it proclaimed its independence. starting in the 1970s, it experienced a long period of war. In 1993, with the successive establishment of the Cambodian National Authority and the realization of national reconciliation, Cambodia entered a new period of peace and development.
Cambodia is a constitutional monarchy, a lower-middle-income country, a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and ASEAN, a traditional agricultural country with a weak industrial base, and dependent on foreign aid and foreign investment.In 2020, Cambodia's gross domestic product (GDP) was about 26.212 billion U.S. dollars, a year-on-year decline of 3.7%, with a per capita GDP of 1,683 U.S. dollars.
