Phetchaburi is the smallest provincial district in Cambodia with an area of 336 square kilometers and a population of 40,280. Its Khmer name means "saddle". The province is located in the south of Cambodia, near Vietnam and facing the Gulf of Thailand. Formerly part of Kampot Province, Phetchaburi was upgraded to a municipality in 1993, and on December 22, 2008, Phetchaburi City, together with Tannachai District, was upgraded by Royal Decree from Kampot Province to a provincial administrative district at the same time as Pailin and Sihanoukville. The capital of Preah Vihear Province is located in the city of Preah Vihear, which has a Preah Vihear National Park, which is a tourist attraction in Cambodia.
