Kokdara is a county-level city under the jurisdiction of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which is under the management of the Fourth Division of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps under the division-city management system. It is bordered by Yining City in the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture to the east, Khorgos City to the west, Durata Port to the south, and Kogurchen Mountain in the north of the northern vein of Tianshan Mountain to the north. It has a land area of 6040 square kilometers.At the end of 2022, Kokdara had a population of 257,400, of which 22.96% were ethnic minorities.
"Kok is a Kazakh word meaning "green" and "Dara" is a Mongolian word meaning "wilderness". The name "Kokdara" is a combination of Kazakh and Mongolian words, meaning "green wilderness".In 2015, Kokdara City consisted of the entire area of the 63rd, 64th, and 68th regiments of the Fourth Division of the Corps, as well as the 66th regiment (south of the Chingy Highway), 67 Regiment (north of Durata Sub-Field and east of Durata Crossing) part of the area.
In 2022, the city of Kokdala realized a gross regional product of 22.134 billion yuan, an increase of 3.3% over the previous year.
