Hanoi (Vietnamese: Thànhphố HàNội/Hanh mềm: City of Ho Chi Minh Hanoi), also known as Purple City, Luo City, Dai Luo, Shenglong, Longyi, Longyi, Longzhi, Zhongjing, Tokyo, Shangjing, Zhongdu, Beicheng, etc., is the capital city of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the second largest city in Vietnam, and the national center of politics, culture, and science and technology.
Hanoi was originally known as Dai Lo, also known as Sheng Long, renamed Hanoi in 1831, and became the capital of the country after the reunification of the North and South in 1976. Located in the Red River Delta in northern Vietnam, it has a total area of 3,340km² and a population of 8.05 million (2019).
Hanoi has a tropical monsoon climate and is a major tourist city in Vietnam, known as the "Spring City of Flowers". Hanoi has the highest number of places of interest in the country.
In 2019, it was ranked 265th in the "Global City 500".
