Penang State (English: StateofPenang; Malay: NegeriPulauPinang), referred to as "Penang", is one of the thirteen federal states of Malaysia, located in northwestern Malaysia, with an area of 1,049 square kilometers, the entire state is divided by the Penang Strait into two parts: the island of Penang and the province of Wetu. It has a total population of 1,766,800 people. George Town, the state capital, is an important port city and the second largest city in Malaysia after the capital city of Kuala Lumpur.
Penang has a large Chinese population and a close relationship with modern Chinese history. It was an important base for Dr. Sun Yat-sen's revolutionary activities. Sun Yat-sen visited Penang five times to propagate revolutionary ideas, raise revolutionary funds, and founded the Reading Book Newspaper Society and the Guanghua Daily here, which received enthusiastic response and strong support from the local Chinese community. People such as Kang Youwei, Huang Xing and Hu Hanmin left their footprints here. The Huanghuagang Uprising was instigated in Penang. in April 2002, then Chinese Vice President Hu Jintao and his wife visited Penang. in December 2015, the Chinese Consulate General in Penang was officially opened. in 2016, for the first time, China topped the list of foreign investments in the state of Penang.
Penang was developed by the British colonial government as the earliest commercial center in the Far East in 1786, when a large number of laborers were imported from abroad, bringing their cultures and traditions along with them, creating Penang's unique scenery, heritage and customs. Penang is not only known for its multiculturalism and harmony, but is also known globally as the "Electronics Manufacturing Base". It is also known as the "Emerald of the Indian Ocean" and the "Silicon Valley of the East", and is the most artistic and cultural center of Malaysia. George Town, the state capital, was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.
