Perak is one of the thirteen states of Malaysia, with the capital city of Ipoh and the royal city of Gangsar, located in the northern and central region of Peninsular Malaysia, with neighboring Thailand to the north, the states of Kelantan and Pahang to the east, Selangor to the south, and the Straits of Malacca at the western edge of Perak, and the states of Kedah and Penang to the northwest. Perak covers an area of about 21,038 square kilometers (2017) and has a population of 2,493,200 (2017), with 12 districts under its jurisdiction.
