The State of Malacca (English: StateofMalacca; Malay: Melaka), abbreviated as "Kota", with its capital city of Malacca (Kota Melaka), is one of the thirteen federal states of Malaysia, situated on the western side of Peninsular Malaysia, and is contiguous with the states of Negeri Sembilan and Johor. It covers an area of 1,720 square kilometers, with a total population of 922,200 (including 47,700 expatriates) in 2018, and three districts under its jurisdiction.
Chinese Ming Dynasty navigator Zheng He led a fleet of ships on seven voyages to the West, five of which were stationed in Malacca, bringing Chinese silk, tea, porcelain and other products and advanced production technology to the area, making Malacca a thriving trade center for a while.
The most important economic activities in Malacca are tourism and manufacturing.In 2017, the GDP per capita of Malacca residents was RM46,015, higher than the per capita GDP of Malaysia.Malacca is served by the Malacca International Airport, a railway station point connecting to the west coastline, bus terminals for the Malacca Bus Terminal and the Ala Raya Bus Terminal, and North-South Boulevard, which is the main highway connecting it to the rest of the state.
On July 7, 2008, Melaka City, the state capital, was officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
