Ulanqab, prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, is located in the due north of China, the central part of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region; bordering Hebei Province in the east, neighboring Xilin Gol League in the northeast, connecting with Shanxi Province in the south, adjoining the capital of Hohhot in the southwest, connecting with Baotou in the northwest, and bordering Mongolia in the north with the border of Mongolia, with a length of more than 100 km, with diverse landforms and consisting of four main parts from the north to the south, which is a typical semi-arid continental monsoon climate in the middle temperate zone, with a total area of 54,500 square kilometers. As of October 2022, the city is under the jurisdiction of one municipal district, four banners, five counties, and one county-level city. As of the end of 2022, Ulanqab had a resident population of 1,631,100 people.
In December 2003, approved by the State Council, Ulanchab League was officially abolished as a city. Ulanqab, meaning "red mountain pass" in Mongolian, has a civilization history of more than 6,000 years, and is the important birthplace of China's ancient northern civilization, as well as an important node of the Prairie Silk Road and Ten Thousand Miles Tea Route, which gave birth to the Chahaer and Dulbert cultures. It is the only non-provincial hub and node city of "One Belt, One Road" and the China-Europe liner, and one of the 23 logistics hubs and carrier cities in the country. There are 5 highways, 6 railroads and 1 airport in the city, which is the necessary place for the northwestern region to go out to the sea in the southeast, the transportation hub connecting the three major economic zones of North China, Northeast China and Northwest China, and also an important passage from China to Mongolia, Russia and Europe. It has attractions such as Huitengxile Alpine Meadow Grassland, Dulbert Prairie and Ulanhada Volcanic Grassland. ; It has been named a national health city and selected to the list of China's characteristic agricultural products advantageous areas, as well as a national model city (county) for double embrace, and one of the co-sponsor cities of the Literature, Tourism and Recreation Cities Alliance.
In 2022, the gross regional product of Ulanqab completed 101.79 billion yuan, an increase of 4.0% over the previous year.
