The Eastern District is located in the northeast of Hong Kong Island and is also the main concentration of human resources in Hong Kong, China. Fishermen have been living in Shau Kei Wan since before the opening of the port. With a total area of about 18.9 square kilometers and a population of about 616,199 in 2001, it is the second most populous district in Hong Kong, second only to Sha Tin. The median monthly household income of households in Eastern District ranks third in Hong Kong among the 18 districts in Hong Kong, after Central and Western and Wan Chai. Therefore, the Eastern District accounts for one of the largest economies in Hong Kong.
