Kowloon City District is a district of Hong Kong, China, with an area of 1,000 hectares and a population of about 380,000 people. It is a predominantly residential area, with the majority of the population living in private housing, including old tenement buildings, large private housing estates and high-class bungalows, and the rest of the population in public housing and Home Ownership Scheme (HOS) estates in the district.
Although the Kowloon City District is predominantly residential, there is also a certain amount of commercial and industrial activity. Commercial activities are found in the busy streets, Whampoa Garden and shopping malls in public housing estates, while industrial activities are mostly concentrated in To Kwa Wan and Hung Hom sub-districts. With over 200 kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, and tertiary institutions, Kowloon City has the largest number of schools in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Baptist University and the Open University of Hong Kong are also located in Kowloon City. In addition, there are a number of recreational and sports facilities in the district, including the Ko Shan Theatre, Kowloon Central Library, Kowloon Tsai Park and Swimming Pool, Ho Man Tin Recreation Center, etc., which provide residents with diversified venues for leisure and activities.
The Kowloon City District is a place of unique character. The Kowloon Walled City in the district was an area of early development in Hong Kong, which was demolished and redeveloped into the Walled City Park in 1993, preserving a number of artifacts of historical value in the park. Through continuous development, five-star hotels and large-scale private housing estates have been built in Kowloon City. The relocation of the Kai Tak Airport to Chek Lap Kok in 1998 has vacated a sizable area of land on the northern shore of Victoria Harbour with good development potential. With the implementation of infrastructural projects in the New Development Areas (NDAs), it is believed that a new scene will be established in the Kowloon City District.
