Shangtang Township, under the Jiangxi Province, Jiujiang City, Wuning County, is located in the northwestern part of Wuning County, the middle part of the Mufu Mountains, the southern foot of the Jugong Mountains, Gan-Eqiang border; ancient inter-provincial stagecoach "Wu Chu Xiongguan", the north through the Thorny Chuchu, south of the Wu Yue, is the main passage of one of the E-Gan; the east, south, and west and the Funatan Township borders the north and the border with the Tongshan County, Hubei Province. The administrative area covers a total area of 117.18 square kilometers. As of the end of 2019, Shangtang Township had a household population of 8,132.
In the old days, the territory of Shangtang Township belonged to Nianfeng Township; in 1984, it was changed to Shangtang Township. As of June 2020, Shangtang Township has 7 administrative villages under its jurisdiction. The people's government of the township is located in Wentang Village.
