Guangzhou City, abbreviated as "Sui", also known as Yangcheng, Flower City, Five Sheep City, is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province, the capital of Guangdong Province, a sub-provincial city, a national central city, a mega-city, the core city of Guangzhou Metropolitan Area, an important central city in China, an international business center and a comprehensive transportation hub, as well as a first-tier city in the world as determined by the State Council. The total area of Guangzhou City is 7,434.40 square kilometers. As of the end of 2022, the resident population of Guangzhou City was 18,734,100 people. As of October 2023, there are 11 districts under the jurisdiction of Guangzhou, and the Municipal People's Government is located at No. 1 Fuqian Road, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou.
Located in South China, downstream of the Pearl River and near the South China Sea, Guangzhou is a hilly area with high terrain in the northeast and low terrain in the southwest, backed by mountains and facing the sea, with hilly mountainous areas in the north, low and medium mountains in the northeast and the Baiyun Mountains known as the "lungs of the city", hilly basins in the center, and the coastal alluvial plain in the south, which is an integral part of the Pearl River Delta. The city enjoys a mild climate in the southern subtropical monsoon, with a distinctive maritime climate.
Guangzhou is one of the first batch of national historical and cultural cities, one of the starting points of the Maritime Silk Road, known as the "millennium business capital"; since ancient times, it has been a place where Chinese and foreign cultures mingle, and it is one of the birthplaces of Guangfu culture. Guangzhou is the headquarters of the Southern Theater Command of China, a national logistics hub, a national comprehensive gateway city, an international comprehensive transportation hub, one of the first coastal open cities, the southern gateway of China to the world, the center of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the Pan-Pearl River Delta Economic Zone, and a hub city of the Belt and Road.
In 2023, the gross regional product of Guangzhou was 303,557,300,000,000 yuan, a year-on-year increase of 4.6%. Among them, the added value of the primary industry was 31.778 billion yuan, up 3.5% year-on-year; the added value of the secondary industry was 777.571 billion yuan, up 2.6% year-on-year; and the added value of the tertiary industry was 222.624 billion yuan, up 5.3% year-on-year.
