Panyu District, a municipal district of Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, is located in the south-central part of Guangzhou City, at the geographic center of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, adjacent to Hong Kong and Macao, bordering Guangzhou City's Haizhu District to the north, the Lion's Ocean to the east, and Dongguan City, and Foshan City's Nanhai and Shunde districts to the west, and Nansha District to the south, at the mouth of the Pearl River. The administrative division covers an area of about 530 square kilometers, with 5 towns, 11 streets and 275 villages (communities). As of the end of 2022, Panyu District had a resident population of 2,807,400.
Panyu was established in the 33rd year of Emperor Qin Shihuang (214 BC), and is an important birthplace of Lingnan culture and one of the starting points of the "Maritime Silk Road". Guangfu culture, such as Lingnan Architecture, Lingnan School of Painting, Cantonese Opera, Cantonese Music, and folk arts, such as the Ao-yu Dance, Piao-color, Beggar's Dance, and Waking Lions, have a long history. Panyu is also known as a gourmet city, and has always been known as "Food in Guangzhou, Taste in Panyu". In Panyu, there are sea and land transportation hubs such as Guangzhou South Railway Station and Lianhuashan Port, and Guangzhou University Town is home to a number of institutions of higher learning such as Sun Yat-sen University, South China University of Technology and South China Normal University.
In 2022, the gross regional product of Panyu District will be 270.547 billion yuan, an increase of 1.4% over the previous year (the same below).
