Tongnan District, belonging to Chongqing Municipality, is located in the northwest of Chongqing and west of Chongqing, which is the new industrial base of Chengdu-Chongqing, the ecological and cultural tourism destination of west of Chongqing, the green vegetable capital of west China, the core plate of the twin-city economic circle of Chengdu-Chongqing, the first modern agricultural demonstration zone, the national sanitary urban area and the main metropolitan area of Chongqing, the "bridgehead" city. Tongnan is a basin with shallow hills, flat terrain and an altitude of 300-450 meters; the climate is subtropical humid monsoon climate. The total area is 1,583 square kilometers; as of 2022, Tongnan District has a resident population of 681,100. As of June 2023, Tongnan District has 3 streets and 20 towns under its jurisdiction, with the district's people's government stationed at No. 120 Xingtong Avenue, Guilin Street. The area of Tongnan District was established in 373 A.D. (the first year of Ningkang of the Eastern Jin Dynasty) as a county, and Dong'an County was set up in 1912, and renamed Tongnan County in 1914 because it was located in the south of Tongchuan Prefecture, and belonged to the Mianyang Prefecture in 1958.Tongnan was reclassified to the Jiangjin District in January 1976, and belonged to the Chongqing Municipality in 1997.Tongnan was removed from the county and set up as a district on June 27, 2015, and was born with the birth of Yang Ankong, Yang Shangkun, Yang Baibing and other great men of the times, and nurtured historical and cultural celebrities such as Chen Tuan, Lu Daqi and Liao Jingqiu. Tongnan is an important transportation hub in Sichuan and Chongqing, with the Yu-Sui-Railway, Yu-Sui-Expressway, Tong-Rong Expressway and Hechuan-Anyue Expressway, and 246 National Highway, 319 National Highway and 351 National Highway lines passing through the area.On July 14, 2017, Tongnan District was named a national health city.On October 14, 2022, it was selected as a 2022 National Rural Revitalization Demonstration County. In 2022, Tongnan District's gross regional product was 55.851 billion yuan, an increase of 3%.
