Cangzhou, a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Hebei Province, is located in the southeast of Hebei Province and the eastern part of the Hebei Plain in the Heilonggang Basin, in the eastern part of the vast and sprawling Jizhong Plain, with a low, undulating terrain that slopes down from southwest to northeast and a warm-temperate continental monsoon climate, with distinct seasons and plenty of sunshine. As of March 2022, the city has 2 municipal districts, 10 counties, and 4 county-level cities under its jurisdiction, with a total area of 14,304.26 square kilometers. As of the end of 2022, the resident population of Cangzhou City was 7,314,800.
In December 1983, Cangzhou City was transformed into a municipality in Hebei Province. The city center is 120 kilometers from Tianjin and 240 kilometers from Beijing in the north and 220 kilometers from the provincial capital of Shijiazhuang in the southwest, making it the southern gateway to the capital city of Beijing and Tianjin, with the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal running through the whole territory. Beijing-Shanghai Railway, Beijing-Kowloon Railway, Shuo-huang Railway, Hand-huang Railway and Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway run through the jurisdiction; in the territory, there are national highway trunk routes such as 104, 106, 307 and 7 expressways such as Beijing-Shanghai, Beijing-Taiwan, Shihuang, Jin-shan, Bao-cang, Coastal and Daguang passing through the area; with the completion and operation of Huanghua Port, the history of Cangzhou City of having a sea but no port has been put an end, and Huanghua Port has become the second largest coal exporting port in China; moreover, there is a national 4A scenic spot, Dongguang Tieguang. Dongguang Iron Buddha Temple, a national 4A scenic spot, and Wuqiao Acrobatic World.In October 2020, it was selected as one of the first batch of pilot list for the construction of new smart cities in Hebei Province.
In 2023, Cangzhou City's gross regional product was 444.01 billion yuan, up 5.8% year-on-year. The added value of primary industry is 37.24 billion yuan, up 1.7%; the added value of secondary industry is 168.69 billion yuan, up 6.0%; the added value of tertiary industry is 238.08 billion yuan, up 6.2%.
