Hedong District, belonging to Tianjin Municipality, is one of the central urban areas of Tianjin, located in the eastern part of the central urban area of Tianjin, on the east bank of the Haihe River. It is adjacent to Heping District and Hexi District across the Haihe River, accompanied by Dongli District to the east, and intersected with Hebei District to the west and north. The topography of Hedong District gradually decreases from northwest to southeast, and the terrain is relatively low-lying where the southern edge meets the Haihe River. There are Haihe River, Yueya River and North Sewage River crossing. Warm temperate semi-humid monsoon climate, monsoon significant, four distinct seasons, concentrated precipitation, rain and heat in the same season. Hedong District has a total area of 39.63 square kilometers (excluding Tianjin Ironworks Street). As of 2021, Hedong District had a household population of 756,100 and a resident population of 848,900. As of October 2022, Hedong District has 13 streets under its jurisdiction, with the district's people's government stationed at No. 32 South Taixing Road.
Hedong District, named after its location east of the Haihe River, was renamed Hedong District in 1955. Dazhigu is the earliest settlement in the urban area of Tianjin. Dazhigu is the earliest settlement in Tianjin city, Tianjin is "the ancient Nine Rivers near the land", "the land of the seashore barren soil", the name of Tianjin since the beginning of Dazhigu.
In 2021, the GDP of Hedong District was 40.093 billion yuan, with a growth rate of 7.0% at comparable prices. The secondary industry amounted to RMB 2.627 billion, accounting for 6.55% of the total GDP of the district; the tertiary industry amounted to RMB 37.466 billion, accounting for 93.45% of the total GDP.
