The ancient city of Lanling is located in Lanling Town, Lanling County, Linyi City, Shandong Province, and was first built in the Western Zhou Dynasty. During the Zhou Dynasty, the Duke of Zhou, who also ruled seventy-two countries, built an earthen city in Lanling, using large red stone as foundation and rammed earth as wall, each about 2 miles long from north to south and from east to west, with a wall height of 3 meters and a thickness of nearly 1 meter. During the Northern Qi period, Lanling King Gao Changgong ordered the expansion of the city, the new city surrounded by a total length of 12 miles, 2.5 miles east to west, 3.5 miles north to south, in a rectangular shape.
