Zaozhuang, a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Shandong Province, is located in the south of Shandong Province, bordering Pingyi, Feixian, and Laning counties in Linyi City to the east, Tongshan District, Jiawang District, and Pizhou City in Xuzhou City, Jiangsu Province to the south, Weishan County in Jining City to the west, on the verge of Weishan Lake, and Zoucheng City in Jining City to the north; it has a total area of 4,564 square kilometers, accounting for 2.97% of Shandong Province's total area. As of June 2023, Zaozhuang has five municipal districts and one county-level city under its jurisdiction. As of the end of 2022, Zaozhuang had a resident population of 3,829,700.
Zaozhuang was formed as a village during the Tang and Song dynasties, and was named after the many jujube trees that formed the village. Zaozhuang is China's first "Cross-Strait Exchange Base" and "National Fitness Yangge City", and is famous for the Railway Guerrillas and the Taierzhuang Battle. There are 47 A-level scenic spots in the city, including 1 5A scenic spot, 12 4A scenic spots, 18 3A scenic spots and 4 national wetland parks. Famous tourist attractions in the territory include Taierzhuang Ancient City, Weishan Lake Wetland Red Lotus Scenic Area, Hugging Calf Mountain, Guanshi Pomegranate Garden, Mozi Memorial Museum, Luban Memorial Museum, Railway Guerrillas Film and Television City and so on.
In 2023, Zaozhuang City realizes the gross regional product to achieve 215.674 billion yuan, with a growth rate of 6.4%.
