Yancheng City, ancient name Yandu, prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Jiangsu Province, the central area of the Yangtze River Delta city, located in China's eastern coastal region, eastern Jiangsu Province, east of the Yellow Sea; the entire territory of the plains landscape, the terrain of the northwestern and southeastern high, central and northeastern low-lying, is divided into the Yellow River and Huaihuai Plain Area, Lixiahe Plain Area, and Coastal Plain Area; for the transition zone of the northern subtropics to the warm-temperate zone climate; as of the end of 2022, the city's jurisdiction of three districts and 5 counties, acting as a county-level city, with a total area of 16,931 square kilometers and a resident population of 6,689,700.
Yancheng City has been established as Yandu County since the sixth year of Emperor Gao Di of the Western Han Dynasty (201 BC). It was renamed Yancheng County in the ninth year of YiXi of Emperor An of Jin Dynasty (413) in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Yancheng City has the only World Natural Heritage China Yellow (Bohai) Sea Migratory Bird Habitat in Jiangsu Province. The city has convenient transportation by sea, land and air, and has basically formed a three-dimensional transportation network consisting of highways, railroads, airways, sea transportation and inland waterway transportation. Nanyang International Airport, Yancheng Port Dafeng Port Area, Binhai Port Area, Sheyang Port Area, Ringshui Port Area has become a national class I open ports, and has become a prefecture-level city with both airports and seaports of two class I open ports, and is the intersection of two major strategies of the country's coastal development and integration of the Yangtze River Delta. The hundreds of kilometers of mudflat wetlands in Yancheng have two national nature reserves of Danding Crane and Elk, and a Chinese sturgeon nature reserve under construction.
In 2023, Yancheng City realized a GDP of 740.39 billion yuan, a year-on-year growth of 5.9% at constant prices.
