The Dongtai Economic Development Zone has vigorously promoted investment attraction, transforming the area from a barren landscape into a thriving industrial hub. Businesses have sprung up from scratch, and industries have grown from weak to strong. Numerous investors from the United States, Italy, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and other countries and regions have established operations here. The zone now hosts a total of 109 projects with a combined investment of 10 billion yuan, including 28 foreign-funded enterprises and16 projects with investments exceeding 100 million yuan, and 55 enterprises have been completed and put into operation, with 6 billion yuan in completed investment. Six major industrial sectors—mechanical engineering, electronics, light industry, textiles, apparel, and new materials—have taken initial shape. In 2007, the zone achieved sales revenue of 6 billion yuan and generated 420 million yuan in profits and taxes,with 14 industrial enterprises ranking among the city’s top 35. As a hub for foreign investment and a cluster for emerging industries, the rapidly emerging new urban area has begun to take shape.
