Suzhou, a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Jiangsu Province, a megacity, is located in East China, the southeast of Jiangsu Province, the south bank of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, the east bank of Lake Taihu, located in the Yangtze River delta plains and the Taihu Lake plains area, the entire terrain is low and flat; it belongs to the subtropical monsoon oceanic climate, with four distinct seasons, a mild climate, and abundant rainfall; it has a total area of 8,657.32 square kilometers. As of the end of 2022, Suzhou City has five municipal districts, one functional district, and four county-level cities under its jurisdiction, with the Municipal People's Government stationed at No. 998, Sanxiang Road, Gusu District. As of June 2023, Suzhou has a real population of 16,196,900, of which 7,810,800 are household residents and 8,386,100 are floating residents.
Suzhou is one of the first national historical and cultural cities, a famous water town in the south of the Yangtze River, and is known as "Paradise on Earth". Suzhou City was founded in 514 BC, with a history of more than 2,500 years. In 589 A.D., Emperor Wen of Sui changed "Wu County" to "Suzhou" by taking the name of Gusu Mountain. Suzhou is an important city in Shanghai Metropolitan Area and Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou Metropolitan Area, one of the important central cities in the Yangtze River Delta as approved by the State Council, a national high-tech industrial base and a scenic tourist city. Gusu District is the first national historical and cultural city reserve, from the Spring and Autumn Wu Zixu built the Helu City to date, Suzhou City maintains a double checkerboard pattern of "parallel land and water, river and street adjacent to each other", and "small bridges and rivers, pink walls and tiles, historical sites and famous gardens" as the unique style. As the core carrier of "Jiangnan Culture", Suzhou has become a distinctive symbol for the world to recognize China with its Kunqu opera, pianoforte, gardens and Suzhou embroidery.
In 2023, Suzhou's GDP will reach RMB 246.534 billion, an increase of 4.6% over the previous year at comparable prices.
