Taicang City, a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Jiangsu Province, administered by Suzhou City, is located in the southeastern part of Jiangsu Province, on the south bank of the mouth of the Yangtze River, between latitude 31°20′-31°45′ north and longitude 120°58′-121°20′ east. It is bordered by the Yangtze River in the east and Chongming Island in the opposite direction, Baoshan District and Jiading District of Shanghai in the south, Kunshan City in the west and Changshu City in the north. The total area is 809.93 square kilometers. Taicang City belongs to the humid climate zone in the southern part of the north subtropical zone, which is characterized by abundant light, four distinct seasons, cold and warm spring and autumn, hot and rainy summer, and cold and little rain in winter. As of February 2022, Taicang governs six towns, two streets, and one economic development zone. The Municipal People's Government is located at No. 99, County Hall East Street, Loudong Street. As of the end of 2022, Taicang had a household population of 533,000 people. The resident population is 843,600, and the urbanization rate is 71.03%.
Ming Hongzhi ten years (1497) built Taicang Prefecture; Republic of China in the first year (1912) named Taicang County; in March 1993, the county was abolished to build Taicang City. Taicang City has formed Loudong culture since ancient times, or Zheng He's anchorage in the Western Ocean, the birthplace of Jiangnan silk and bamboo, the birthplace of the Loudong School of Painting, and the birthplace of the mythical Cowherd and Weaving Maiden. It is a city along the river and Shanghai, and is a necessary place for the Yanjiang Expressway, Sukuntai Expressway, Shanghai-Sutong Railway and Yanjiang Railway (under construction). It was awarded the honorary title of "Hometown of Chinese Folk Culture and Art" in 2018-2020, National Sanitary City (District), Healthy City Construction Demonstration City in 2018, the fourth batch of National Ecological Civilization Construction Demonstration Cities and Counties, and the National Double Embracing Model City (County). There are tourist attractions such as Jincang Lake National Water Conservancy Scenic Area, Taicang Modern Agricultural Park, Taicang Shaxi Ancient Town, and Trap Mountain Park.
In 2023, Taicang realized a GDP of 173.494 billion yuan. 2023 Taicang's general public budget revenue was 18.942 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 6.5%.
