Songyuan, also known as "Burdune, New City", is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Jilin Province, the central city of western Jilin Province, the national energy strategy base, the famous city of ice and snow tourism in the northeast, and the gateway city of Jilin opening to the west. As of 2022, the city has 1 district, 2 counties, 1 autonomous county, and 1 county-level city under the jurisdiction of the city, with a total area of 22,000 square kilometers, and a built-up area of 80 square kilometers in the central urban area (Ningjiang District and Qianguo County). As of 2022, Songyuan has a resident population of 2,160,700, with a resident urban population of 1,035,600, and an urbanization rate of 47.93%. The municipal people's government is located in Ningjiang District.
Songyuan City is located in the central and western part of Jilin Province, with Changchun City on the eastern border of the city, Siping City in the south, Tongliao City in the southwest of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Baicheng City in the northwest, Daqing City in the north of Heilongjiang Province, and Harbin City in the northeast of Heilongjiang Province. Located in Harbin, Changchun, Daqing triangle, the core area of the Harbin-Changsha city cluster, is an important transportation hub in the northeast and logistics distribution center, with Baotou, Hohhot, Ordos, known as the "Four Little Dragons of China's economic growth in the north". Songyuan was built and prospered because of oil, Jilin oil field is located in the territory, is the national renewable energy demonstration city and the national biomass energy industry cluster city.

Songyuan City is known as "grain warehouse, forest sea, meat bank, fish country" reputation, is located at 45 degrees north latitude of the world's golden corn belt, the golden rice belt, is China's largest miscellaneous grains and beans distribution center.
