Shanwei, prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province, is located in the southeastern coast of Guangdong Province, at the southern foot of Mount Lotus, the east coast of the Pearl River Delta, the south of the South China Sea, separated from Taiwan Province by a water, with a total area of 4865.05 square kilometers. The mainland along the coastline is 455.2 kilometers long, accounting for 11.1% of the province's coastline length. The sea area within the continental shelf (i.e., within 200 meters of water depth) is 23,900 square kilometers, equivalent to 4.5 times the land area. Shanwei's metropolitan area is partially located within the "Shenzhen Metropolitan Area", which will be redelineated in Guangdong Province's "14th Five-Year Plan" in 2021. As of the end of 2022, Shanwei had a resident population of 2,682,600.
In the sixth year of Xianhe (331) of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, Hai Feng County was established. In the 11th year of Kaihuang of Sui Dynasty (591), it belonged to Methodist Prefecture. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, it belonged to Huizhou Prefecture; in January 1956, it came under Huiyang Prefecture; on March 22, 1959, it was transferred to Shantou Prefecture; on December 22, 1983, it was transferred to the jurisdiction of Huiyang District; in 1988, Shanwei City was established. As of October 2022, Shanwei City has 1 city district, 2 counties, and 1 county-level city under its jurisdiction. Shanwei City is one of the 13 red revolutionary bases in China, the birthplace of China's first county-level Soviet regime, the only full-area old revolutionary area in Guangdong, and all four counties (cities and districts) in the city are Class I old revolutionary area counties; Shanwei, with its back to the mountains and its face to the sea, intersects and fuses the cultures of Southern Fujian, Chaoshan, Hakka and Guangfu, and is geographically and culturally self-contained, forming a distinctive "Sea-Land-Feng Culture". Local traditional dramas include Zhengzhi Opera, Xiqin Opera and Baizhi Opera. It has nurtured such famous people as Peng Pei, Xie Fei, Chen Jiongming, Chen Qiyu, Huang Dingshen, Ma Sicong, Zhong Jingwen, Yang Chengzhi, Ke Lin, Peng Shilu, and Huang Xuhua. Shanwei has the largest coastal lagoon in mainland China--Pinqing Lake, the "Eight Scenic Spots of Shanwei", such as the Red Square Starfire, Xuanwu Spiritual Sound, Phoenix Coming to the City, Chaiwang Wonders, Silver Beach in the Golden Compartment, Lianfeng Overlapping Jade, Wupo Positive Spirit, and Nanwan Vertebrate Wave.
In 2023, Shanwei's GDP will be 143.084 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 5.0%.
