Shenzhen, abbreviated as "Shen", also known as Pengcheng, is a prefecture-level city, a sub-provincial city, a listed city in the national plan under the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province, a mega-city, a special economic zone, a national economic center and a national innovative city approved by the State Council, as well as one of the core engine cities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. As of the end of 2022, the city has nine districts under its jurisdiction, with a total area of 1,997.47 square kilometers and a resident population of 17,661,800.
Shenzhen is located in the south of China, the south of Guangdong Province, on the east coast of the Pearl River Estuary, south of the Tropic of Cancer, with Daya Bay and Dapeng Bay to the east, the Pearl River Estuary and Lingding Sea to the west, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to the south, and Dongguan City and Huizhou City to the north. The terrain of the whole territory is high in the southeast and low in the northwest, most of which is low hilly land, interspersed with gently sloping terraces, and the western part of the coastal plain. It has a subtropical monsoon climate, pleasantly warm, with abundant precipitation.
The predecessor of Shenzhen City is Bao'an County, the main part of the Ming and Qing Dynasties belonged to Xin'an County, Guangzhou Province, before the establishment of the city belonged to Huiyang District. The name of Shenzhen first appeared in historical records in the eighth year of the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty (1410), and in March 1979, Bao'an County was changed to Shenzhen City, which was under the dual leadership of Guangdong Province and Huiyang District, and then directly under the leadership of Guangdong Province in November, and in August 1980, Shenzhen City was established as the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone.
Shenzhen is the window of China's reform and opening up and a new immigrant city, creating the world-renowned "Shenzhen speed", known as "China's Silicon Valley". It is also one of the four major central cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, a national logistics hub, an international comprehensive transportation hub, an international innovation center for science and technology industries, and one of the three major national financial centers in China. It is also making every effort to build an advanced demonstration zone of socialism with Chinese characteristics, a comprehensive national science center, and a central city of the global ocean.
In 2022, Shenzhen will realize a GDP of 3238.768 billion yuan, a per capita GDP of 183,274 yuan based on the resident population, a per capita disposable income of 72,718 yuan, and a per capita consumption expenditure of 44,793 yuan.
