Chaonan District, a district of Shantou, Guangdong Province, is located in the southwestern part of Shantou City, bordering Nanhai to the east, Puning to the west, Huilai County to the south, and Chaoyang District to the north. As of 2018, Chaonan District has 1 street and 10 towns under its jurisdiction, with a total area of 599.87 square kilometers. According to the seventh census data, as of 00:00 on November 1, 2020, the resident population of Chaonan District was 1,231,638 people. Chaonan District is rich in natural resources, by the mountains and the sea, the district has a mountainous area of 382,300 acres, accounting for 40.28% of the total mountainous area of Shantou City, 208,200 acres of arable land, accounting for 29% of the total arable land in Shantou City, with a coastline of 14.7 kilometers long, and an area of more than 4,000 square kilometers of sea. The city is rich in culture, belonging to Baiyue land in Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties, and belonging to Haiyang State (Nan'ou State) in the time of Xia and Shang. Since the Qin Dynasty, it is the Chaoshan area of Guangdong. From Qin Dynasty to Three Kingdoms, it belonged to Jieyang County of Nanhai County. From the Jin Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, it belonged to Yian County and Chaoyang County of Chaozhou Prefecture. 2003 saw the abolition of the county-level Chaoyang City and the establishment of Chaoyang District and Chaonan District, with a large number of expatriates, which is a famous hometown of expatriates in Guangdong Province. In 2021, Chaonan District realized a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of 5,029,584,000 Yuan, an increase of 6.4% year-on-year, with an added value of the primary industry of 2,057,820,000 Yuan, an increase of 3.5% year-on-year; and an added value of the secondary industry of 3,001,942,000 Yuan, an increase of 5.8% year-on-year.
