Simao District, part of Pu'er City, Yunnan Province, is located in the south of Yunnan Province, the south-central part of Pu'er City, and the middle and lower reaches of the Lancang River, between latitude 22°27′-23°06′N and longitude 100°19′-101°27′E. It is connected to Jiangcheng County in the east, Lancang County and Jinggu Dai and Yi Autonomous County in the west, and Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture in the south, with a total area of 3928 square kilometers. According to the seventh population census data, as of zero hour on November 1, 2020, the resident population of Simao District was 416,188 people.
Simao District is the starting point of the historical Tea Horse Road - Southern Silk Road, one of the three major customs towns in Yunnan, once known as "Southeast Asia Land Dock" and "Silver Simao". Simao District is an important transportation hub and golden frontier for China's opening up to Southeast Asia and South Asia, and is the core area of Pu'er's opening up to the outside world, with National Highway 213, Kunmao Expressway (G8511) and Yumao Railway (Yuxi-Mohan section of the old and middle-aged railroads) running through the whole territory, and Pu'er Airport and Simao Port, the state-level first-class ports.
Simao District is the origin and distribution center of Pu'er tea. The main relics of Simao District include Shiping Guild Hall, Simao Literature Temple, Simao Old Customs House, and the Ancient Tea and Horse Trail, etc. Historical figures include Lv Zhiyi, a member of the Allied Association, and Chen Qizhou, a Qing official.
