Awang Township, belonging to Dongchuan District of Kunming City, Yunnan Province, is located in the southern end of Dongchuan District, between the geographic coordinates of 102°08′02″-103°18′31″E longitude and 25°47′18″-26°02′12″N latitude, neighboring Drive Township of Huize County in the east, and Jinyuan Township and Gongshan Township of Xundian County in the west and south respectively, bordering Tongdu Street, Wulong Township and Hongdi Town in the north, with a total area of 274 square kilometers from the People's Government of Dongchuan District. bordering on the north with Tongdu Street, Wulong Township, and Hongtudi Township, and 23 kilometers away from Dongchuan District People's Government, with a total area of 274.8 square kilometers. As of the end of 2019, the household population of Awang Township was 37,522.
In December 1964, it was Awang Commune, under the administration of Xundian County; in October 2005, it was changed from Awang Township to Awang Town. As of June 2020, Awang Township has 1 community and 16 administrative villages under its jurisdiction.
