Yuanqu County, part of Yuncheng City, Shanxi Province, is located in the south of Shanxi Province and the northeast corner of Yuncheng City, bordering Yangcheng County and Qingshui County in the northeast, Yicheng County and Jiangxian County in the north, Wenshi County in the west, Xiaxian County in the southwest, Jiyuan City in Henan Province in the east, and Mianchi and Xin'an Counties in Henan Province across the river in the south.The county covers an area of 1,620 square kilometers, with 11 townships and 71 administrative villages. It was called "Gufang" during the Shang and Zhou Dynasties, and was established in Qin Dynasty, and renamed "Wakiqiu" during the Song Dynasty, taking the meaning of "surrounded by mountains, such as the curvature of the wall". Wakiqiu County is surrounded by mountains on three sides, and the landforms in the county can be categorized into erosion tectonic terrain, denudation accumulation terrain and accumulation terrain from north to south. There are highway trunks such as Wenyuan Expressway and Wenyuan Secondary Road in the county; the main scenic spots include Alexandria Natural Ecological Tourism Area, Yellow River Reservoir Tourism Area, Birding Stream Tourism Area and Wangmao Cave.
In 2022, the gross regional product of Yuan 9.877 billion yuan was realized in Yuanqu County, an increase of 5.6% from 2021 at constant prices.
