Hunyuan County, belonging to Datong City, Shanxi Province, is located in the northeastern part of Shanxi Province, at the middle and upper reaches of the Hun River, a tributary of the Sanggan River, between latitude 39.67°~39.83°N and longitude 113.72°~113.92°E. It has a total area of 1,968 square kilometers and is connected with Lingqiu County in the southeast by the Hengshan Mountain. It is bounded by Guangling in the east, Ying County in the west, Lingqiu and Fanzhi County by Hengshan Mountain in the southeast, and Yunzhou District and Yanggao County by Liuleng Mountain in the north, with a total area of 1,968 square kilometers. According to the seventh census data, as of 00:00 on November 1, 2020, the resident population of Hunyuan County was 237,749, and it is a model county of double embrace in Shanxi Province.
Hunyuan County was first established in the Western Han Dynasty and named in the Tang Dynasty, because the Hun River originates in the county, so it is called Hunyuan County. In May 1912, it was changed to Hunyuan County, and on June 25, 1993, Hunyuan County was transferred to the jurisdiction of Datong City. As of October 2021, Hunyuan County has 6 towns and 10 townships under its jurisdiction, totaling 213 administrative villages and 11 communities. The county government is located in Yong'an Township. Hunyuan County is located on the edge of the Loess Plateau, with a temperate arid and semi-arid continental monsoon climate, and two major river systems, the Hun River and the Tang River.
In 1992, Hunyuan County was named by Shanxi Province as a famous historical and cultural city, the storage of immovable cultural relics 488, there are 29 key cultural relics protection units (7 national, provincial 8, municipal 5, county 9), there are intangible cultural heritage protection project list of 23 (provincial 8, municipal 4, county 11), the existing wall of the Great Wall of the Northern Qi Dynasty, the Ming Dynasty and so on. The famous Beiyue Hengshan, one of the five mountains of China, is one of the first batch of national key scenic spots announced by the State Council, known as the "People's Heaven North Pillar", "Jiecai famous mountain" reputation, and the overhanging cliff building Hangkong Temple together constitutes the famous Hengshan beautiful scenery.
On February 27, 2020, by the Shanxi Provincial Government study agreed, Hunyuan County quit the poverty-stricken county. 2022, Hunyuan County completed the GDP of 569,020,000 yuan, a growth rate of 0.6%.
