Changdao County (withdrawn), named for the presence of Changshan Island in its territory, was formerly a county under the jurisdiction of Yantai City, Shandong Province. Located between Jiaodong and Liaodong peninsulas and at the intersection of the Yellow and Bohai Seas, Changdao County is located in the connecting belt of the Bohai Sea Economic Circle and is the only island county in Shandong Province. Changdao County consists of 32 islands, of which 10 are inhabited. The land area of the island is 56.8 square kilometers, the sea area is 3,541 square kilometers, and the coastline is 187.8 kilometers.
The main tourist attractions within the territory of Changdao County include Jiuzhang Cliff, Half Moon Bay National Geopark, Miaodao Ancient Temple Complex, Fairyland Source Folk Customs Park, Linhai Fenghuangshan National Forest Park, Miaodao Mazu Cultural Park, and Beizhuang Ruins.
In June 2018, the People's Government of Shandong Province formally approved the establishment of Changdao Comprehensive Pilot Zone of Marine Ecological Civilization, and in November 2018, Changdao County was selected as the 2018 National "Happiness Hundred Counties List". The third batch of practice and innovation bases of "green water and green mountains are golden silver mountains".
In June 2020, the State Council approved the abolition of Penglai City and Long Island County, the establishment of Penglai District, with the former Penglai City and Long Island County administrative area for the administrative area of Penglai District.On September 1, Penglai District was officially listed, and Changdao Island was independently operated in accordance with the system of provincial-level marine ecological civilization construction functional area.
