The name "De" of Dezhou originates from "De Shui" (德水). De Shui is an alias of the ancient Yellow River. In the third year of Kaihuang in Sui Dynasty (583), the name was changed from "Ander" to "Dezhou". Dezhou is the transportation hub and economic center of China's Jili-Lu junction area, an important city of industry and trade in northwestern Shandong Province, and a new energy industry base in Shandong Province, which is located at the intersection of the Beijing-Shanghai and De Shi Railways, with the Beijing-Shanghai (Fukoku) Expressway, Qingdao-Yinchuan Expressway, Dezhou-Shi (Jiazhuang) Expressway, and the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal passing through the area, and the transit of National Highways 104, 308, and 205. In September 2016, Dezhou was selected as one of the "Top 100 Prefecture-level Cities in China for Livelihood Development".
