Pingxiang, prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Jiangxi Province, an important member of the city cluster in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, is located in the western part of Jiangxi Province, bordering Yichun and Ji'an in the east, Ji'an and Zhuzhou in Hunan Province in the south, Zhuzhou in Hunan Province in the west, and Changsha in Hunan Province in the north, with a more complex geomorphology and a subtropical humid monsoon climate zone, with distinct seasons, and with a total area of 3,823.99 square kilometers. As of January 2023, the city has 2 districts and 3 counties under its jurisdiction. As of the end of 2023, the city had a resident population of 1,816,000 people.
On March 10, 1970, Pingxiang was upgraded to a prefecture-level provincial municipality. Pingxiang City is the "west gate" of Jiangxi Province, and is in the center of the economic development pattern of West Gan, known as "Xiang-Gan Thoroughfare" and "Wu-Chu Throat". Pingxiang is in the core area of the radiation of ChangZhuTan Economic Circle, and at the same time accepts the radiation of Pan-Pearl River Delta Economic Zone and Southeast Fujian Economic Zone. The territory of Hukun railroad across the city hinterland and Beijing-Guangzhou, Beijing-Kowloon two major arteries connected. 319 and 320 National Highway was a cross in the city through the intersection, Hukun high-speed, Pinghong high-speed through the whole territory. The city center is only 120 kilometers away from Hunan Changsha Huanghua Airport, with superior location and geographical conditions. In the early days of Pingxiang Anyuan was the key area for the work of the Communist Party of China (CPC), and Mao Zedong came to Pingxiang and Anyuan for 9 times. Anyuan, gave birth to the first industrial workers' branch of the CPC and the first small group (branch) of the Chinese Socialist Youth League.
In 2022, Pingxiang realized a gross regional product of 116.033 billion yuan, an increase of 2.0% over the previous year.
