Shangrao City, ancient name Xinzhou, Guangxin, Jiangxi Province, prefecture-level city, located in northeastern Jiangxi Province, east of Zhejiang Province, south of Fujian Province, Jiangxi Province, Yingtan City, west of Fuzhou City, Nanchang City, Jiujiang City, north of Jingdezhen City, Anhui Province, Huangshan City, Jiangxi Province, is the regional center of the city, Ⅱ big city, third-tier cities, covering a total area of 22,737 square kilometers. As of the end of 2022, Shangrao City had a resident population of 6,435,300; it has jurisdiction over three districts, eight counties, and is in charge of one county-level city; the municipal government is located in Xinzhou District.
Legend has it that Shangrao City was named after "Shangsheng Fu Rao". In the ancient times, it was a part of Wu, and in the fifteenth year of Jian'an (210) of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Poyang County was set up. From Tang Dynasty to Qing Dynasty, the realm of Shangrao City belonged to Rao Prefecture and Xin Prefecture (renamed Guangxin in Yuan Dynasty) for a long time; Wuyuan County belonged to Huizhou Prefecture; in 1949, Shangrao Prefecture was set up; and in 2000, it was renamed Shangrao City. Shangrao City is one of the birthplaces of Taoism; it is the hometown of Zhu Xi, Zhan Tianyou, Fang Zhimin, and Xin Qiji also lived here for a long time. Shangrao has excellent revolutionary tradition, and once established the revolutionary base in northeast Gan. Shangrao City is rich in tourism resources, there are three national AAAAA level scenic spots, namely, Sanqingshan Scenic Spot, Turtle Peak Scenic Spot and Jiangwan Scenic Spot; and there are three World Heritage Sites, namely, Sanqingshan, China Danxia and Wuyi Mountain. Wuyuan County in Shangrao City is rated as a national demonstration area for regional tourism.
Shangrao City is mainly hilly, high in the south-east and low in the north-west, with Poyang Lake in the west, with subtropical humid climate, suitable for cultivating crops, specializing in Wannian Tribute Rice, Guangfeng Majia Pomelo, Wuyuan Green Tea, etc.; it has formed new energy, non-ferrous metal, electromechanical optics, new building materials and other leading industries. Shangrao City is a national comprehensive transportation hub, with Hefei high-speed railway and Hukun high-speed railway passing through the city; Shangrao Sanqingshan Airport is a 4C-level civilian regional airport.
In 2023, Shangrao's gross regional product will be 340.16 billion yuan, up 6.7% year-on-year.
