Nanjing, or Ning for short, is the capital of Jiangsu Province, located in the eastern region of China, downstream of the Yangtze River, near the river and the sea. The city has 11 districts under its jurisdiction, with a total area of 6,597 square kilometers, and a built-up area of 7,528,300 square kilometers in 2013, with a resident population of 8,187,800, of which 6,591,000 are urban residents. With a history of more than 6,000 years of civilization, 2,600 years of city building and 500 years of capital building, Nanjing is one of the four major ancient capitals of China, and is known as the "Ancient Capital of the Six Dynasties", "Capital of the Ten Dynasties", and "Capital of the Ten Dynasties". As of 2013, Nanjing has 75 institutions of higher education, including 8 211 universities, second only to Beijing and Shanghai; 25 national key laboratories, 169 national key disciplines, and 83 academicians of the two academies, all of which rank third in China.
