Danyang City, county-level city under the jurisdiction of Jiangsu Province, administered by Zhenjiang City, is located on the south bank of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, in the south of Jiangsu Province, with latitude of 31°44′~32°09′ north and longitude of 119°24′~119°54′ east, the city has a total area of 1,047 square kilometers. The origin of the name Danyang (Yang) is twofold: firstly, it is named because of the abundance of red willows in the area; secondly, Danyang County was changed from Danyang County, which was established in the Qin Dynasty. Danyang was founded in the Warring States period, and was initially known as Yunyang Eup. In December 1987, Danyang was abolished as a county and established as a city, Danyang City, with Zhenjiang City in charge.
