Shuyang County, abbreviated as Shu, is a county under the jurisdiction of Suqian City, Jiangsu Province, located in the northern part of Jiangsu Province. It is one of the three pilot counties in Jiangsu Province under direct administration, and the only county in northern Jiangsu to be included in the cultivation of a type-II large city, and is situated in the combined part of the four cities of Xuzhou, Lianyungang, Huai'an, and Suqian, with a total area of 2,298 square kilometers. As of February 2024, Shuyang County has 6 streets, 23 towns, 1 township and 1 economic development zone, with the county people's government stationed in Shucheng Street. As at the end of 2022, the total household population was 1,975,600. Shuyang is named after its location on the sun of the river Shu, and was known as Houqiu and Huaiwen in ancient times. During the Western Han Dynasty, Houqiu County was first established. In the 7th year of Jiande of the Northern Zhou Dynasty (578), Huaiwen County was changed to Shuyang County. Shuyang is the hometown of Chinese Calligraphy, the hometown of Chinese Huaihai Opera, the county of Chinese Couplet Culture, the famous textile and garment city of China, the training base of Chinese Bonsai, and the base of Chinese Photography. The Beijing-Shanghai Expressway has four interchanges in Shuyang. Shuyang has a dense network of 32 rivers, including the Xinyi River and the Huashu New River. By 2021, Shuyang will be the county with the largest built-up area and the largest concentrated population. Shuyang County has intangible cultural heritages such as Huaihai Opera and Gongdugong, and is a traditional Huaiyang cuisine region. Specialties mainly include Miao Tou Qianzhang and Yanji Chaozhi. Tourist attractions include Shuyang Art Museum and Hanshan Scenic Area. Shuyang is famous for its reform and innovation, and has created the remarkable "Shuyang Speed" and Shuyang Experience. The county economy and basic competitiveness of Shuyang County have been ranked among the "Top 100 Counties in China" for successive years, and Shuyang County has been selected as one of the top 100 counties in the country in terms of industrialization for successive years. Shuyang Economic and Technological Development Zone (ETDZ) is the only state-level economic and technological development zone located in a county-level city in northern Jiangsu Province. Shuyang is a national ecological demonstration zone, a national hygienic county, a provincial garden city, a provincial excellent management city, and a nominated national civilized city. In 2023, Shuyang County will realize a GDP of 141.167 billion yuan and a general public budget revenue of 6.71 billion yuan.
