Gusu District, Suzhou City District, Jiangsu Province, is located in the central part of Suzhou City, is the political, educational, cultural and tourism center of Suzhou City. It has a total area of 83.4 square kilometers, including all of the 14.2 square kilometers of the ancient city. It borders the Suzhou Industrial Park in the east; Wuzhong District in the west and south; and Xiangcheng District in the north. As of 2023, it has jurisdiction over 8 streets with a total of 169 communities. The People's Government of the district is located at No. 510, Pingchuan Road. As of the end of 2022, Gusu District had a resident population of 928,400 people.
Gusu is an important birthplace of Wu culture, with the only ancient city in China whose site has remained unchanged for more than 2,500 years, basically maintaining the double checkerboard pattern of "parallel land and water, river and street adjacent to each other" and the unique style of "small bridges and flowing water, whitewashed walls and tiles, and famous monuments and gardens" as shown in the Song Dynasty's "Pingjiang Picture". The unique style of Pingjiang Road and Shantang Street is characterized by Pingjiang Road and Shantang Street have been recognized as "National Famous Historical and Cultural Street", and eight gardens including Canglang Pavilion and Lion Grove and five core sections of the Grand Canal have been listed in the World Cultural Heritage List. There are 184 cultural relics protection units at all levels, of which 24 are at the national level and 37 at the provincial level; 254 buildings and 865 ancient structures are under control and protection. Gusu District was established on October 26, 2012, by the former Pingjiang, Canglang, Jinyan three old urban areas of Suzhou merged into a national first and currently the only national historical and cultural city reserve, set up a reserve party working committee, management committee, is the provincial party committee, the provincial government of the sending agencies.
In 2022, Gusu District will realize a regional GDP of 91.25 billion yuan, complete a general public budget revenue of 6.184 billion yuan, and a per capita disposable income of 73,852 yuan for urban residents.
