Mudanjiang City, a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Heilongjiang Province, is located in the southeastern part of Heilongjiang Province, is the provincial sub-center city of Heilongjiang Province, and the largest central city in the eastern part of Heilongjiang Province, with a total area of 38,827,000 square kilometers, and a total population of 2,785,000 as of the end of 2012. Mudanjiang is named after the Mudan River, one of the largest tributaries of the Songhua River in Heilongjiang Province, which runs across the city. The major scenic spots and human attractions that have been developed and utilized in Mudanjiang City include the Crater National Forest Park, Mudanfeng National Forest Park and Mudan National Nature Reserve, the Snow Township Ski Resort, Mudanfeng Ski Resort, the Bawomen Throwing themselves into the River Commemorative Cluster Sculpture, the Hengdaohezi Northeastern Tiger Forest Park, and the Snow Castle constructed on the surface of the Mudan River in winter.In 2016, the State Council approved the abolition of the county and establishment of a city in Dongning.
