Dongguan City, abbreviated as "Dongguan", is a prefecture-level city and mega-city under the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province, and the central city on the east coast of the Pearl River Delta as approved by the State Council. Located in South China, south-central Guangdong Province, on the east bank of the Pearl River Estuary, bordered by Guangzhou City in the northwest, Shenzhen City in the south, and Huizhou City in the northeast, Dongguan has a subtropical monsoon climate with long summers, no winters, and abundant rainfall. As of October 2022, Dongguan City has 4 streets and 28 towns under its jurisdiction, with a total area of 2,542.67 square kilometers. As of the end of 2022, Dongguan City has a resident population of 10,437,000 people, of which 9,628,100 are urban, with an urbanization rate of 92.25%.
Eastern Jin Dynasty, established Baoan County. Tang, renamed Dongguan County. Song, divided Dongguan Xiangshan Town to establish Xiangshan County (now Zhongshan City). Ming, the Dongguan County guardian of thousands of households, the editor of 56 miles to establish Xinan County (now Shenzhen City). 1985 September, Dongguan County was reorganized as Dongguan City (county-level), still belongs to the Huiyang District. 1988, Dongguan City was upgraded to the prefecture-level city, directly under the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province.
Dongguan City is one of the birthplaces of Guangfu culture, one of the important birthplaces of Cantonese opera. It is the opening place of China's modern history and the pioneer of reform and opening up, the first batch of national comprehensive pilot areas of new urbanization and the famous historical and cultural city of Guangdong. Famous hometown of overseas Chinese, National Forest City, International Garden City, National Civilized City, National Basketball City and other titles. Dongguan is one of the central cities of the Pearl River Delta, one of the cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, one of the cities in the Shenzhen Metropolitan Area, the first of the "Four Little Tigers of Guangdong", the so-called "Factory of the World", an important transportation hub and foreign trade port in Guangdong, and one of China's four prefectural-level cities that do not have districts.
In 2023, Dongguan's GDP amounted to 1,143.813 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 2.6%. Among them, the added value of the primary industry amounted to 3.625 billion yuan, up 5.0% year-on-year; the added value of the secondary industry amounted to 647.818 billion yuan, up 1.4% year-on-year; and the added value of the tertiary industry amounted to 492.371 billion yuan, up 4.1% year-on-year.
