Meizhou, prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province, is located in northeastern Guangdong Province, at the junction of Fujian, Guangdong and Gan provinces, with a land area of 15,800 square kilometers. It belonged to Chaozhou in the Sui and Tang dynasties, and Chengxiang was elevated to Jingzhou in the third year of Qianhe (945) of the Southern Han Dynasty. In the fourth year of Kaibao of Song Dynasty (971), Jingzhou was changed to Meizhou. In the 11th year of the Yongzheng reign of the Qing Dynasty (1733), Chengxiang was elevated to the status of Jiaying Prefecture, with jurisdiction over Chengxiang, Pingyuan, Zhenping, and the five counties of Xingning and Changle in the former Huizhou Prefecture, which were called Jiaying Wuxi, and the prefecture-level city of Meizhou was established in 1988. As of 2022, Meizhou City has two municipal districts, five counties, and one county-level city under its jurisdiction.At the end of 2022, Meizhou had a household population of 5,393,500 and a resident population of 3,858,000.
