Cixi City, a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Zhejiang Province, is administered by Ningbo City, a large city of type II, named after the creek to the south of the city and Dong An of the Eastern Han Dynasty, who was "a mother with a kind heart and a son with a filial piety". Cixi is located in the East China Sea, the south shore of Hangzhou Bay, east and southeast of Ningbo City, Zhenhai District, Jiangbei District, west and southwest of Yuyao City, 60 kilometers east of Ningbo City, 148 kilometers north of Shanghai City, 138 kilometers west of Hangzhou City, the Yangtze River Delta region, the southern wing of the Shanghai Economic Circle, an important industrial and commercial city, and also approved by the State Council, one of the coastal economic open area, with a total area of 1,361 square kilometers. As of the end of 2022, Cixi had a resident population of 1,865,200. As of June 2023, Cixi City has 5 streets and 14 towns under its jurisdiction, with the Municipal People's Government stationed at No. 655, Sanbei Street, Baisha Road Street.
Cixi City is located in the southern edge of the northern subtropics, monsoon climate; terrain high in the south and low in the north, was a hill, plains, mudflats, three steps towards Hangzhou Bay; is a typical reclamation city, known as "Tang Tu Sung Land", rich in mudflat resources, is the richest area in Zhejiang Province, the land reserves; there is a long celadon culture, is one of the main origins of the Yueyao celadon. It has a long history of celadon culture and is one of the main birthplaces of Yue Kiln and an important starting point of the "Maritime Ceramic Road". It is a national civilized city, a national garden city, a national sanitary city, and one of the first pilot areas of Zhejiang High-quality Development and Construction of Common Wealth Demonstration Area. Cixi is one of China's three major electric appliance production bases, and the number of national-level specialized, special and new "small giant" enterprises ranks first among the top 100 counties in the Yangtze River Delta.
In 2023, Cixi realized a GDP of 263.945 billion yuan, an increase of 6.0% at comparable prices, ranking 3rd among all counties (cities and districts) in Ningbo.
