Xuanwei City, a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Yunnan Province, administered by Qujing City, is located in the northeastern part of Yunnan Province, situated between latitude 25°53′~26°44′N and longitude 103°35′~104°40′E. It is neighboring Panzhou City of Guizhou Province in the east, Zhanyi District of Qujing City in the south, Huize County in the west across the Niulanjiang River and Weining County of Guizhou Province in the north, covering a total area of 6,069.88 square kilometers, and its urban area is about 240 kilometers from Qujing Municipal Government Residence 102 kilometers, 240 kilometers from the provincial capital Kunming City. As of 2022, Xuanwei City has 9 streets, 13 towns and 7 townships under its jurisdiction. According to the Seventh National Population Census Main Data Bulletin, the total population (resident population) of Xuanwei is 1,189,813.
Xuanwei has a long history. Before Qin Dynasty, it was under the jurisdiction of ancient Yelang. It was established as a county in the Western Han Dynasty, and was set up as a prefecture in the Tang Dynasty and Zhan Yi Prefecture in the Yuan Dynasty. Qing Yongzheng five years (1727), analyzed Zhan Yi Prefecture set up Xuanwei Prefecture. The second year of the Republic of China (1913), cut the state to set up counties.
